A dramatised adaptation not of a novel, but of a series of 6 engravings by England’s greatest social satirist, William Hogarth.
Catapulting the audience into the seedy world of Georgian London, this film investigates eighteenth century vice from the perspective of a young artist striving for documentary integrity and in danger of getting too close to his subject.
A love story and a morality tale starring Toby Jones, Zoe Tapper, Sophie Thompson, Geraldine James and Richard Wilson, combining visceral drama with innovative sound design to speculate on the inspiration behind one of the most famous sequences in British art.

“This is a drama laden with atmosphere, brutal and elegant in equal measure. Throughout, the narrative remains faithful to the original paintings down to the minutest detail. But there are also flights of fancy that lift the drama beyond the original canvas.”
